Rhinoplasty Question and Answers
Q - At what age is it appropriate to have rhinoplasty?
A-Rhinoplasty really should not be performed on children while they are still growing and thus their nose is still growing, and often in an unpredictable fashion. If surgery is performed before a child has stopped growing, revision rhinoplasty will likely be needed in the future. Results achieved through surgery can be destroyed or altered through the continued growth of the nose.
So for aesthetic or cosmetic purposes, it is best to wait until a child stops growing, usually around the age of 16 for girls, and after the age of 19 for boys. If, however, a nose job is required due to severe disfigurement (caused by an accident for instance), surgery may be an option, though for lesser deformities it still may be best to wait.
Keep in mind, too, that younger patients may not be prepared to deal with the psychological impact of cosmetic surgery.
